October 2012
 NO FOOLING AROUND!

Yes, October happens to be our most favorite month because at Classic Collections, we all LOVE Halloween! This marvelous holiday appeals to the inner children in all of us and provides an opportunity to be goofy, act silly and dress up like "fools" without criticism! How terrific is that?! Not to mention the festive parties, seasonal food and of course, the spirited beverages!

Halloween (a contraction of its original title "All Hallows' Evening") originally incorporated traditions from pagan harvest festivals and coincided with Christianity's All Saints and Souls Day (Nov. 1st & 2nd) dating back to 837 AD. The night before, now known as Halloween, was an opportunity for departed Christians to move onto the next world. To avoid being recognized and captured by a "soul" and perhaps sent to purgatory, Christians would wear costumes and masks to disguise themselves to ensure that the next day they could go to heaven. This custom was prominent in the Middle Ages in Europe and the British Isles and was introduced to the United States in earnest in the 19th Century. In fact, in 1837, the carving of pumpkins was recorded as an "American" tradition and Halloween was becoming more a celebration of hopefully, a good harvest, and represented a festive night before getting ready for the cold months ahead.

Trick-or-treating is traditionally a celebration where children dressed in costumes go from house to house asking for treats or, benignly, threaten to play a trick on the homeowner. Dating back to the Middle Ages, this practice of "guising" originated in Ireland (well, that explains MY Halloween passion!) and Britain and was even recorded as far south as Italy.

As far as fashion goes, all you fashionistas should know that it is perfectly normal for adults to dress up on Halloween! In fact, in the early 20th century the first mass-produced costumes were sold in stores....for both children and adults!

So, start getting your costume ready, think of candy apples and mulled wine, remember the fun of trick or treating as a child and have yourself a Happy Halloween! BOO!!!

 FRISKY, FABULOUS FOOTWEAR!

Who can deny the allure of a sexy and unique shoe that shouts out high fashion? Statement shoes, created by an array of talented and coveted designers, are often the focus of an entire outfit and command our attention.   For instance, Christian Louboutin, undoubtedly one of the most collected designers, offers an enormous selection of platform shoes and boots in delicious suede for fall.

Gone are the days when shoes and handbags matched a sweet little suit ensemble. Now, shoes can be the tail wagging the dog especially when fall and  winter rolls around and boots are included in the mix!

From high, strappy, metallic snake styles by  Jimmy Choo to the embellished dressy heels by Prada, to the classic silk print by Gucci, you have to admit these shoes are showstoppers!

   FALL'S PRINT REVOLUTION!

Yes, Roberto Cavalli has been doing printed fashion pieces for years. But, this year, prints have been a staple in all of the fall fashion magazines by designers such as Etro, Blumarine, Diane von Furstenberg, Armani and so many others. Save the Queen, often embellished with wood or enamel pieces providing accents is one of the major proponents of print fashion as is Greek designer Mary Katratzon. Now based in London, Mary's designs can be found in Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York and Nordstrom.

Classic Collections has a tremendous  inventory now of Roberto Cavalli as well as Save the Queen....so, print lovers, come on in and find a treasure!

NOW ACCEPTING CONSIGNMENTS!

This is the perfect time of year to clear out the unworn, wrong sized, unloved, ill fitting or just plain old "why did I buy this" items! We know that you want to make room in those poor overcrowded closets for all the beautiful fashions of fall, so let us help you edit your wardrobes!

We will make house calls and take consignments in the shop by appointment for your convenience. As you know, all items must be in perfect condition, clean and on hangers. Shoes that are barely worn or brand new will be considered. Handbags, scarves, costume jewelry, fine jewelry and accessories are especially  needed as they fit almost every customer and size is not as relevant. Should you want to consign fine men's or women's jewelry, we have appraisers who will help us professionally price your gems and we will meet with you by appointment. FYI, we are insured by Lloyd's of London so be assured that your merchandise is as safe as possible.

Your discard is someone's great treasure find! It's funny, almost all of our customers become consignors and our consignors become our customers...it all goes around. So, if you really, really want to be green and help the planet....recycle! And remember, the best thing about consigning is that you get paid for it!
